How Mind Craft Fish works

One loop, and one rule that holds it together: only learning creates growth.

Most learning apps for children bolt a game onto a worksheet. Finish the questions, play the game. The two halves never really meet, and children work out very quickly which half they came for.

Mind Craft Fish is built as a single loop instead. Everything a child does in a learning game shows up somewhere they care about — and the fun parts can spend what learning earns, but can never replace it.

The loop

  1. Play a short learning game. Arithmetic, Stroop, number hunt, coding, character craft, rhythm, memory, English words, Light & Shadow, or the tank timer for focus. Most rounds are a few minutes.
  2. Earn coins and stars. Coins come steadily. Stars are rarer and mark rounds that went well.
  3. Grow the aquarium. Coins buy fish food, seaweed, coral lamps, shell arches, bubble towers, filters and oxygen pumps. Stars trade for rarer creatures — a golden ryukin, a moon jellyfish, a sunfish.
  4. Explore further. The beach, the voyage map, the collection book and seasonal events all open up as the ocean fills in.
  5. Spend on reward games. Fish Adventure and Puffer Pop cost coins and stars to play. They are the treat.
  6. Go back to step one. That is the only way to refill.

Why reward games do not pay coins

This is the deliberate part, and it is unusual enough to be worth spelling out.

Fish Adventure and Puffer Pop have their own small currencies — mushrooms and bubbles — that stay inside those games and buy things inside those games. Neither of them pays into the main economy. No amount of skill at the reward games will buy a single fish.

The reason is simple. If a child can get coins from the fun game, they will get coins from the fun game. Every hour of the day. And the design goal here is the opposite of that: play more learning games, play fewer reward games. Keeping the two economies separate is what makes that a structural fact rather than a rule a parent has to enforce.

It also means the aquarium is honest. Every fish in it was paid for with something the child actually learned.

What earning feels like

Rounds are short and end cleanly. A clean round moves straight on to the next question after about a second. If something was missed, the correct answer stays on screen for three seconds before the next button unlocks — long enough to look at, short enough not to feel like a punishment.

In the ten-question rounds of Arithmetic and Stroop, questions missed on the first pass come back once at the end of the round, with their original options. Each question returns at most once, even if it is missed again, so there is no way to get stuck in a correction loop. Get them all on the second pass and the results screen says so — and a firework display waits on the beach.

There are no streaks to break, no timers counting down on the child, and no score that goes backwards. Progress only ever moves one direction.

What the ocean is for

The aquarium is not a scoreboard. Fish get hungry, algae grows, water quality drifts, and a tank that has been left alone for a while will look like it. Feeding, cleaning and dosing bacteria are small, calm actions that a child can do in under a minute and see the result of immediately.

Fish can be named. Press and hold one and it will say something — that it is hungry, that it is happy, that it misses the sea. Temporary visitors say how many days they have left. It is a small thing, but it is the difference between a collection and a place.

What parents control

The loop adapts to the child's age on its own, but none of it is locked. Any single game can be switched off or capped at a difficulty. Daily missions, screen time and rewards are all adjustable, and the learning report shows what has actually been played.
