Ages

What ages is Mind Craft Fish for?

Two different numbers, both true, and worth keeping apart.

The App Store age rating is 9+. That is the official rating on the store listing, and it is the number to go by when you are deciding whether the app is appropriate at all.

Inside the app, the age setting starts at 5. That is a different thing: it controls which games appear and how hard they are. Some activities genuinely work for a five-year-old sitting next to an adult, and the app is built to allow that.

Both statements are true and we would rather print them side by side than let the second one imply the first. The store rating is not 5+.

How the age setting works

The first time the app opens it asks two questions: how old the child is, and whether they usually play alone or with a grown-up. Everything else is configured from those answers. There is no test and no assessment — it is a starting point, not a judgement about your child.

The answer lands in one of four bands.

What each band gets by default

Age 5

The smallest set, chosen so that reading is never the obstacle. Arithmetic (addition only, up to 10, with a slow meteor), number hunt on a 3×3 grid, the copy-the-drum rhythm game and the memory games all run solo. The tank timer and Fish Adventure are marked as together — an adult helps set the minutes or steer.

Stroop, coding, character craft, English and Light & Shadow are off. Stroop's options are written colour words, so a child who cannot read them is not playing Stroop; the others need reading or fine control that is not there yet.

Ages 6–7

Almost everything opens up, with difficulty capped low. Stroop starts at its easiest stage where the word and the colour match. Character craft starts around second-grade content. Coding and Light & Shadow are marked together for the first run through.

Ages 8–9

Every game is available solo. Arithmetic, Stroop, number hunt, coding and character craft still have a difficulty ceiling so the app does not jump ahead of where the child is.

Age 10 and up

Everything, uncapped. This is the band the app was originally built for.

You can override all of it

The bands are defaults, not rules. From the parent dashboard you can switch any single game off, cap its difficulty by hand, or open one up that the band would have hidden. A game switched off disappears everywhere, including from the daily missions.

You can change the age at any time, and nothing is lost when you do — each game keeps its own progress, so raising or lowering the age only changes what is offered, never what has been earned.

Reading and language

The interface comes in English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese, and the spoken audio follows the interface language.

The word games depend on which language you pick. On English the app offers the English word games only. On the other three you get that language's character games plus the English ones. Parents can override this per module too.

A note on what this is not

The age bands are a content-selection tool, nothing more. They are not a developmental assessment, they do not measure ability, and a child being happier in a lower band than their birthday suggests means nothing at all. If you are unsure where to start, set it low — moving up costs nothing and loses nothing.
