Open code, a licensed model
Two different licences apply when you use Image MLX Lab: one for our code, one for the model it runs. Please read both.
| Part | Licence | Commercial use |
|---|---|---|
| Image MLX Lab code (this project) | MIT License | Allowed |
| Qwen-Image-2.1 model (default, downloaded separately) | Qwen Research License | Not allowed without a licence from Qwen |
| mlx-serve runtime (downloaded and built during setup) | MIT / Apache-2.0 | Allowed, under its terms |
The code — MIT License
Copyright © 2026 Houjun Co., Ltd. The MIT License in plain words — this summary does not replace the licence:
- Use, copy, change, merge, publish, distribute and sell the code, for any purpose, free of charge — including in commercial and closed-source products.
- Keep the copyright notice and the licence text with every copy or substantial part.
- There is no warranty.
The model — Qwen Research License
Image MLX Lab does not include any model weights. During setup you download Qwen-Image-2.1 (as 4-bit or 8-bit MLX packages derived from it, and optionally its vision module) from their publishers. That model is made by Qwen and governed by the Qwen Research License Agreement:
- It allows non-commercial research and evaluation.
- Commercial use of the model — and of what you make with it, as far as its licence reaches — needs a separate licence from Qwen.
- The MIT License on our code does not and cannot give you any rights in the model.
In practice: using Image MLX Lab with its default model is for non-commercial use. If you want to use it for paid work or in a product, get a commercial licence from Qwen first, or use the code with a model whose licence allows it.
Not covered by the MIT License
- The models, as above.
- Third-party software — mlx-serve, MLX, Python packages and build tools — keeps its own licences. The repository ships only a patch for mlx-serve.
- The Image MLX Lab name and icon identify this project; the MIT License does not give permission to use them as the name or logo of another product or service.
- Demo images on this site and in the repository were generated for the project; they are there to show the software.
